The Touchstones series of poetry anthologies was first published in the UK between 1968 and 1972 in five volumes. In this article, the compilers of the anthologies, Michael and Peter Benton, look back over the 40 years of the series’ life. They reflect upon the principles which have guided their choices; and the social and political pressures, often exerted by governments, which they have confronted in their attempt to help school students become enthusiastic, committed and discriminating readers of poetry.

Peter Benton is a fictional character and surgeon for the first eight seasons of ER. Peter Benton in the first few seasons is portrayed as the goal-oriented arrogant surgeon. He, at times, portrays an abrasive personality; shown repeatedly throughout treatment of interns and co-workers. He is typically ambitious but remains loyal as a mentor, friend, and strong advocate to John Carter following Carter's addiction to pain meds.

"New Touchstones Advanced" is an exciting new poetry anthology for post-16 students that provides a challenging and interesting course of study, emphasising the development of students' individual responses to and interpretations of a wide range of poetry. "New Touchstones Advanced" satisfies the requirements of all specifications for AS and A level English and offers an invaluable resource for all students to develop their knowledge and improve their own skills in reading and writing poetry.
