Great book with "true" Ghost stories. A lot of them I had heard of before, but I really enjoyed the no-frills, "journalistic" writing! It made the stories more unsettling. For leisure reading, I love all things supernatural, disturbing, unsettling, and mysterious, but I am also very logical and if something is supposed to be a "true" story, I prefer if it's fact-based and unembellished

Pop Art. You Will Hear the Locust Sing. Not all of the stories in 20th Century Ghosts are horror stories, by the by. Some are wistfully supernatural, some are darkly disturbing mainstream fiction, and one lacks any trace of nastiness and is actually quite sweet. But they are subtle, friends and neighbors.

Read our pick of the best books since 2000 . Book four, the first of the doorstoppers, marks the point where the series really takes off. The Triwizard Tournament provides pace and tension, and Rowling makes her boy wizard look death in the eye for the first time. The turbulent waves of 20th-century history crash over it as the house is sold by a Jewish family fleeing the Third Reich, requisitioned by the Russian army, reclaimed by exiles returning from Siberia, and sold again.

I absolutely LOVE this book. The author is great. Knight divulged spooky details in some very famous true hauntings that I didn't know about previously...and I have extensively researched all of the most publicized hauntings. The editing is great, too, but this collection of ghostly treasures was published back in 1984 when the industry was well versed in proper English and cared about their jobs. Best True Ghost Stories is a wonderful little gem of a book. I was surprised to see that it was originally intended for "Young Readers" through Simon & Schuster! But never mind; if you love a great ghost story (and there's plenty of freaky poltergeist documentation as well) you need to get this book, find a thunder and rain storm, a comfortable bed, a soft blanket, a cat (all preferably well niched in a dark mansion by the sea) and have some gruesome, ghostly fun!!!

Great book with "true" Ghost stories. A lot of them I had heard of before, but I really enjoyed the no-frills, "journalistic" writing! It made the stories more unsettling. I ended up in a Wikipedia rabbit hole Googling a lot of these, looking at the "photographic evidence". For leisure reading, I love all things supernatural, disturbing, unsettling, and mysterious, but I am also very logical and if something is supposed to be a "true" story, I prefer if it's fact-based and unembellished. The facts can be just as scary!!! It's a pretty short book, though... left me wanting more! Overall, good book or gift!

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, that’s everybody’s choice but these stories are so fun to read (if you’re into nongory spooky stuff) like I
am and these are just awesome! I had actually heard of a couple of the same stories beforehand. Oooooh... much more convincing!

This book is wonderfully written and really very scary! As an adult, I thought it would be a little juvenile, since it is labeled for young adults. Not the case! The stories are good enough, and scary enough, for adults as well as youngsters. Each one is very detailed and several are quite long, with lots of descriptions and multiple hauntings per story. They also offer explanations for many of them, going into who the ghost probably is, and why they may be there. Truly, I got chills from several of these stories! Highly recommended if you like good ghost stories that will make you want to leave the lights on!

I agree that it appears to be juvenile with the cover drawing. But if you like scary stories that make you wonder about such strange activity it will certainly deliver. A lot of historic hauntings but my fav part was the poltergeist activity.
