I ended up purchasing several copies of this substantial career handbook for anyone seeking a satisfying work life after all the rules have changed. My father worked for a major corporation for forty years. His loyalty ensured that he moved slowly up the ladder from salesman to the rung just below the vice president tier. Before he had a chance to enjoy that stratum, the '80s hit, and the company brought in young leadership, gave "golden parachutes," to the executives over 55, and ditched the "lifetime loyalty," concept. Dad took his parachute, his dignity, and regretted his loyalty, his untaken paid vacations, and all the things he might have done.
Three days ago I dropped off my son at college. I have been telling him for years that he must discover what his passions and genuine interests, and find several career paths that might allow him to work at what he loves. This book is for him to read after he switches majors a time or two, and understands that his career will quite likely consist of many phases, not rungs on a ladder, but sideways moves, acquiring skills, experience and expertise, until he can move up or over to the spot that he loves most, and allows him the financial freedom that is most necessary, not simply the most.
I will give this book to each of my two daughters, with their very different personalities and likely career interests.
