The oxidation of hydrocarbons, including hydrocarbon polymers, takes the form of a free-radical chain reaction. As a result of mechanical shearing, exposure of ultraviolet radiation, attack by metal ions such as those of copper and manganese as well as other possible mechanisms, a hydrocarbon molecule breaks down into two radicals. Since the effect of oxidation differs from polymer to polymer it is important to evaluate the efficacy of the antioxidant with respect to some property seriously affected by oxidation.
The advances made since then have in general involved the use of modern experimental and theoretical tools to obtain insights into details that are still not quite clear.
By nature, selective oxidations are also producing CO2 as the end product, much preferred by the thermodynamics. An extensive data-mining study of C3 and C4 selective oxidation and ammoxidation reactions occurring in the gas phase over solid catalysts has been conducted. The reactions include the amm(oxidation) of propane, propene, isobutane and isobutene to produce α,β-unsaturated mononitriles and unsaturated carboxylic acids.
