Six years ago, when Denise Allen became a curator at the Frick Collection, she was surprised to discover that the first thing many visiting scholars asked to see was not the famous Vermeers or Holbeins or Constables, but an obscure bronze oil lamp a little more than six inches tall. With its long spout and surface richly embellished with decorations of grotesque figures, swags and shells, it is considered an important work by the Italian Renaissance sculptor Andrea Riccio.

This ancient heroine was understood in the Renaissance as a symbol of civic virtue, of intolerance of tyranny, and of a just cause triumphing over evil. Judith is portrayed as if she were a classical statue. The drapery folds of her costume, a clinging white gown, fall in sculptural forms, and her stance, the twisting contrapposto prevalent in Renaissance figures, derives from ancient models.
