Harlan Coben - Just One Look Series -. (Mystery, Thriller ) An ordinary snapshot causes a mother’s world to unravel in an instant. Eric Wu hadn't held two men in the basement, Grace now realized. Just one. One who had sacrificed himself to save her. One who probably knew that he was going to die and wanted to scratch out some last truth in the only way left to him.

Just one look is all it takes sometimes to set your world tilting into the unknown. there are those moments when your life simply unravels. A loose thread pulled.

Just one look at Coben's latest stand-alone thriller (after No Second Chance) highlights the author's customary strengths (swift pacing, strong lead characters) but also his weaknesses, including limited originality and, in this case, a plot so complicated that many final pages are devoted to sorting it ou. In his four stand-alone thrillers, the past comes back to bite or haunt the protagonist, or the present vanishes in one fatal moment.

I was hooked on this novel for the first chapter. A killer on death row admits that he killed yet another victim, the sister of a politician. I was hooked.

Then the novel began with another (unrelated) plot. A woman finds a strange photo in the packet of pictures she had developed. Then her husband disappears. Then. . .

Honestly, I felt like I was in the middle of one of those soap operas, where you only see five minutes of a plot at a time. It's like a jigsaw puzzle that you have to put together. The plots in this novel kept switching and made no sense; they didn't seem to relate to each other.

And characters? This novel had a whole slew! Far too many to remember. A reader almost needs to jot down each character with a brief description in a notebook just to get the gist of who's who.

Seriously, a reader almost needs a roadmap to get through this novel. I liked the initial story, but then the novel went in too many different directions.

My expectations of a book by Harlen Coben are always high, so I felt let down by this story.
The author would appear to be running out of plots.
This is silly in my opinion, and the ending! Disappointing.

I have read six Coben novels, and this one was by far my least favorite. Instead of the usual surprise ending Coben served up in the others I have read, this book has a truly fantastical final twist -- not only ridiculous, but also completely superfluous. Moreover, the Eric Wu character is Just too much and not an enjoyable character to read about from any perspective. I did not mind Wu's limited role in "Tell No One," but I very much disliked Wu's much larger role in "Just One Look."

It's the middle of the night. I've just finished Just One Look. It has dark portions in it that are difficult to read through but mostly the author's tale is immaculate. He pushes all of the right buttons. He makes you feel as if these are all ordinary people who somehow bump into each other, like bumper cars at the fair. He shows their goodness and their badness. He makes you want to turn the pages till the end. It's the middle of the night. I'm going to get the next book from Mr. Coben's offerings.

I've been a Coben fan for a long time. I love his fast-paced thrillers that always keep me guessing up until the end pages.

This mystery thriller caught me from the first page, as most of Coben's books do. The reader finds out in the first pages about an accidental death that was actually a murder. That little tidbit and a mysteriously appearing photo start this rip-roaring tale off at 100mph and it never slows down.

Coben's characters are real people caught in terrible circumstances and he does a fabulous job of letting the reader get to know and care about his characters - then he lowers the boom.

"Just One Look" had a convoluted storyline and I actually had to think (poor me) about what was happening in the story but it was well worth the strain on my little brain.

In addition to an entertaining mystery, the interior dialogue of the three main female characters captures lots about our society with both insight and delightful humor. This is superior writing at its best. Do yourself a favor by both reading this novel and sharing it with your friends

Reading this book was a real treat! I have not been ab,e to put it down. Full of twists and turns, it kept my attention without let-up. Many mystery novels give a hint of the protagonist(s) early one, and a perceptive reader can figure out the outcome....almost willing the main character to open his eyes and LOOK! This novel was not like that...it kept me guessing until the very last paragraph. Well done, Mr. Coben
I’ve read lots of Harlen Coben’s books, but this is, by far, the most complicated. I like to write, too, but I write on the fly. By the seat of my pants, as it were. This story had to be plotted first, right down to the twists at the end.

There’s no practical reason to explain what it’s about. Can’t be done, not in the short reviews I write. Suffice to say, you will NOT be able to put it down. This is an edge-of-your-seat book!!
