Weston describes himself as a lover of steam and these unique 24 paintings comprise the full history of the British Steam Locomotive, from the dawn of the steam age in the early 19th Century through to the end of the era when all that remained of these majestic giants were carcasses lying in the scrapyards of 1960s and 1970s Britain. The paintings have been cleverly produced, combining reproductions of authentic railway posters and portraits of the pioneers of steam together with images of railway stations and the locomotives themselves.

David Weston was born in Belgrave, Leicester, in 1935 to an aircraft engineer father. He first worked as a draper, painting in his spare time. Weston's first gallery and workshop was in Leicester in the late 1960s, at the junction of Barkby Road and Fairfax Road. He supported his artistic work by offering a picture framing service.

He was introduced to the subject by John Scholes (deceased) of the Clapham Museum and later the British Transport Museum. In the early 1970s he was commissioned to paint The Great Train Robbery Board Game Box by the Games inventor Bruce Barrymore Halpenny. Selected paintings from Weston's History of the Great British Steam Locomotive and Rolls Royce Fantasia were reproduced as interval slides used by ITV Schools in 1981, 1985 and 1986. He was made an honorary Doctor of Letters (. itt Later years and death.

The central challenge of history painting lay in selecting a particular subject that could engage the heart and instruct the mind. In devising appropriate figures, the painter demonstrated his mastery of anatomy and expression. In depicting significant events that appealed to the conscience, history painting deserved its reputation as the most demanding and rewarding form of art-both for the creator and the viewer. For his own history paintings, Reynolds declared he would sometimes deviate from vulgar and strict historical truth, in pursuing the grandeur of his design.
