This is the first book I can remember reading by M. Kerr. I read it as an adult in my YA literature class and was mesmerized. I never read anything like it. Like all of M. Kerr's books, the protagonists are teenagers and it is about finding the balance between individuality vs. conformity and friendship and love. But the characters are so unusual and vividly drawn out.

...but I wasn't crazy about the book itself, for all its supposed greatness. I thought it a little too edgy for a book written for its intended audience, with its strange characters and plot, however creative. (I'm pretty conservative-minded when it comes to books for young people.)

I read this in high school & loved it so much that I bought a copy for myself. It's a very realistic story about teenagers trying to find their way in the world, and they happen to be dwarfs/little people. i wouldn't really call it a love story. It's more like a story about life. i don't know why people would think that it's trash, it's just a light story that's perfect for young adults and up.

I felt the plot was ridiculous, as were a number of the characters. All these many years later I recall how stupid the book was. It stuck in my mind for being that bad.

If you're a huge Kerr fan, buy a cheap copy (I doubt you can find it in libraries) and see for yourself. It's weird enough to be interesting, and a fairly easy read.

Felt forced. I remember thinking it was actually insulting to little people.

On the surface, this is a book about being a dwarf, but, in reading it, it's clear that this is a book on two people struggling with conformity and normality. Our main character has a mother who judges people by how well they fit in. Reading non-inspirational books, being around people who aren't perfectly formed enough is "depressing".

It's a good take on the subject, really.
