Kristen Landon’s first middle-grade novel is refreshing on a couple of levels. First, there is zero paranormal activity and no zombie presence.

An eighth grade girl was taken today. Kristen Landon’s first middle-grade novel is refreshing on a couple of levels. Second, it discusses (albeit sketchily) a real-world problem: financial responsibility of individuals and families.

In a world not too far removed from our own, kids are being taken away to special workhouses if their families exceed the monthly debt limit imposed by the government. Thirteen-year-old Matt briefly wonders if he might be next, but quickly dismisses the thought. After all, his parents are financially responsible, unlike the parents of those other kids. As long as his parents remain within their limit, the government will be satisfied and leave them alone.

The top floor was perfectly climate controlled, but Coop had given me a workout. I hadn’t made it easy on him, either. Both of us had gone full-out for almost two hours; the only break was when we stopped to say, No, we’re not done with the gym, to a boy-Isaac, I learned-and a girl-Kia

In this society, families are given a spending limit. Go over your limit and there are tough consequences to pay. One day, after several large purchases, the government comes and takes thirteen year old Matt. He goes to a workhouse where children are classified by skill. In this workhouse, they are separated by job, given living conditions according to their skill level, and expected to work off the family debt. Additionally, they are given the ability to make purchases but don't realize that they are adding to the debt of their families in doing so. No one gets to leave...until Matt tries to break out.

This book was okay. A few stretches, could be better developed. City of Ember, Hunger Games...all far better reads.

My 10th grade son read this and told me I would have enjoyed it, I just got done, it was great! Took me a day to read, and it was worth it. Good plot, the flow of the story was fast paced and attention getting

Land in has written a great novel that keeps the reader interested through out the entire novel. I know I personally would recommend it to a young adult/teen. Adults be wary, it might not be exactly what you're looking for. But don't let that persuade you to not read it, I'm just saying you might notice been Landons target audience for this novel.

Again, good all around book. Not the absolute best but definitely far from the worst.

I was introduced to the book by a friend, read it and enjoyed it. I gave it to my thirteen year old son and he just devoured it. He read it a couple of times over the Thanksgiving break. It is a winner if you can get a teenage boy to focus for that long during a school holiday.

Good book just what was listed.

I got this book for my daughter for a class project in school. She said it's pretty good.
This book has a very interesting story. The kids in the book were great and I was really on their side rooting for them.
