The Bitter Tea of General Yen is a 1933 American pre-Code drama film directed by Frank Capra and starring Barbara Stanwyck, and featuring Nils Asther and Walter Connolly. Based on the 1930 novel The Bitter Tea of General Yen by Grace Zaring Stone, the film is about an American missionary in Shanghai during the Chinese Civil War who gets caught in a battle while trying to save a group of orphans. Knocked unconscious, she is saved by a Chinese general warlord who brings her to his palace

Redirected from The Bitter Tea). Oswald Morris Wynd (1913–1998) was a Scottish writer. He is best known for his novel, The Ginger Tree, which was adapted into a BBC televised mini-series in 1989.

Redirected from The Bitter Tea). Wynd was born July 4, 1913 in Tokyo of parents who had left their native Perth, Scotland to run a mission in Japan. He attended schools in Japan where he grew up speaking both English and Japanese. In 1932, he returned with his parents to Scotland and studied at the University of Edinburgh.

All of this was too bad as THE BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN is more than a curiosity of its time. Briefly, Stanwyck arrives in 1920's Shanghai in the midst of a civil war to marry her fiancée of three years who has preceded her there. One of the first people she meets after landing is the eponymous general in mufti whose car has just run over her ricksha man.
