Mantiene el interés aunque no sea apasionante. La historia trata de un agente de inteligencia sovietico que cae en desgracia y se topa accidentalmente con un asesino serial. Interesante visión de la vida diaria en la Unión Soviética más allá de la historia policial que es algo frágil.

Poco antes de la muerte de Stalin, Leo Demidov policia de la seguridad del estado y su esposa Raisa caen en desgracia y son enviados a Voualsk como castigo, degradado a simple policia tiene sus primeros casos, unos niños encontrados en el bosque asesinados que le recordaron la muerte del hijo de su ex compañero en Moscú con el mismo patrón de mutilaciones. Ayudado por el general Nesterov van recopilando datos de forma extraoficial llegando a contabilizar 44 asesinatos de niños y adolescentes con la boca llena de corteza de árbol, un tobillo atado y el estómago extirpado llegando a la conclusión de que un psicópata asesino anda suelto por la geografía soviética y nadie se había dado cuenta hasta ese momento y ponen manos a la obra para darle caza pero la maquinaria represiva estatal tiene otros planes y han de moverse rápido para llegar a tiempo y descubrir al asesino antes de que los cacen a ellos.
Novela ambientada en la Unión Soviética de la posguerra en los últimos meses de la dictadura de Stalin (1878-1953) donde el sistema represivo, las delaciones, las ejecuciones sumarias y el temor de ser enviados a los gulags mantenían atemorizada a la población soviética, el personaje del psicópata está inspirado en el asesino en serie Andrei Chikatilo (1936-1994) responsable de más de cincuenta asesinatos que el autor se tomó la licencia de enmarcarlo en otra época para poder jugar mejor con la trama aunque dejando claro la culpa del estado en estos crímenes por no investigar a conciencia y tratar de acallar los hechos. Una trama que capta la atención y mantiene al lector atrapado hasta la última página.
