Brian Lawrence Wildsmith (22 January 1930 – 31 August 2016) was a British painter and children's book illustrator. He won the 1962 Kate Greenaway Medal for British children's book illustration, for the wordless alphabet book ABC. In all his books, the illustrations are always as important as the text. For his contribution as a children's illustrator, Wildsmith was a runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1966 and 1968.

A large, typically multi-colored, characteristically fanciful Wildsmith product-with split pages that supply the strung-together story with a little internal drama (and an excuse, maybe, for being as arbitrary as it is). Thus, the surprise of turning a half-page and seeing a box falling off a passing truck-with farm-boy Paul, who's watching from a tree-may keep kids from wondering how a box with a pelican egg got on that truck.

So glad I found this book! I loved it when I was little and remembered specifically the beautiful illustrations throughout. Sad it isn't produced anymore, but so glad I found a used copy. Great condition!!

I bought this book because of the clever half pages that go on as you read the story, My nephew loves it.

It's too bad that so many of Brian Wildsmith's books are out of print. I loved this book as a child, and now enjoy reading it to my own son. The illustrations are just beautiful, the story itself is charming and my 3 year old loves the clever half pages. If you're looking for more of Wildsmith's work, I also recommend Daisy and Python's Party.

This is a sweet book about a boy with a pet pelican - how he protects his pelican, and how he lets him go at the end of the book.

At the very VERY end we find out that the pelican, now safe in the Land of the Pelicans, knew she was a girl the whole time. She lays an egg, and presumably the story starts over again.
