The New York production of "The Goodbye People" by Herb Gardner opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theater in New York on December 3, 1968 and ran for 7 performances. Sammy Smith recreated his stage role in the movie version. The cast included Milton Berle as Max, Brenda Vaccaro as Nancy, and Bob Dishy as Arthur, with Tony Lo Bianco as Max's attorney son Michael.
