Belonging: a Retrospective Journal of the South

I wrote Belonging: A Retrospective Journal of the South which was published by NSU of Louisiana Press, where most of the books were lost in a flood. The book is a collection of free verse, narrative poems in which real persons and place names are used with permission. The book, shown here, has a pen and ink illustration by Ruth Powers Bridges of my beloved grandparents' home on the cover. Unfortunately, it was placed upside down by Amazon. The book contains an introduction by Dr. Leah Rawls Atkins, noted past Professor of History at both Auburn University and Samford University, past Director of Alabama Arts and Humanities and revered author of local histories.

Belonging begins with a memory from when I was two years old in 1933. It is about my first "nurse", Amanda Rivers, from the Zion City area of Birmingham. The poems continue until 1978 and end with a final word about hope for future poems which did come and are, as yet, unpublished. NSU of Louisiana Press now does only in-house materials. Pelican Publishing Company published my first two books, Wild Honeysuckle and Green Again in 1966 and 1971 respectively and had additional printings of them for a total of five printings and reissued both three years ago. Both become available from time to time at Amazon.

Amazon sometimes acquires copies of my third book, Heir's Song, 1976, Heirship Press.

My life has been rich, full and long -1931 to the present. Belonging: A Retrospective Journal of the South tells much of my story and is my favorite among my books because so few survived the flood in NSU of Louisiana at Natchitoches and it deserves a fuller life.
