At First Sight is a romance novel by Nicholas Sparks, written in 2005. Set in North Carolina, United States, At First Sight is the sequel to Sparks’ previous book, True Believer, written in the same year. At First Sight was originally the result of a 45-page epilogue in True Believer. It was then that Sparks got the idea to write At First Sight as its predecessor.

Chick experiences unrequited love-at-first-sight when he observes Paige Ellis emerging from the hotel swimming pool. His obsession, exceeded only by his need to possess her, isn't diminished when he learns that she is happily married. Instead, he befriends Paige and her near-perfect husband, Chandler. A short time later, back from Hawaii, Chick's obsession compels him to drive to Paige's house, where he violently confronts Chandler. But this is just the beginning of Chick's nightmare as his life spirals homicidally out of control, resulting in the destruction of everything.

This novel is dedicated to Miles, Ryan, Landon, Lexie, and Savannah. For this novel in particular, I have to thank my wife, Cathy. Not only was she the inspiration for LexieТs character, but she showed amazing patience while I was writing the novel. Larry Kirshbaum, the illustrious head of Time Warner Book Group, is heading to different pastures, but I canТt let him leave without a final word of praise. I know it was a tough decision, but IТm sure you know whatТs best for you.

However, the first book I read, Nights In Rodanthe, infuriated me because the author felt he had to step in and give brief little glimpses into the future - I hate that. So when the predicted future arrived, I decided not to waste my time with by this author. Now, after reading "At First Sight", I know I will avoid a future publications by Mr. Sparks. I laughed, cried, and experienced just about every emotion possible while I read this book; as you normally would while reading a book by this Author. A definite must read!!

This book is dedicated to you, Christina, my wife. According to the writer Jorge Luis Borges, the idea of the Zahir comes from Islamic tradition and is thought to have arisen at some point in the eighteenth century.

This book is dedicated to you, Christina, my wife. Zahir, in Arabic, means visible, present, incapable of going unnoticed. That's none of your business, I reply. The inspector pauses for a second and grows serious; he says that I was arrested as part of routine procedure, but that he is nevertheless very sorry about my wife's disappearance. He is married himself and although he doesn't like my books (So he isn't as ignorant as he looks! He knows who I am!), he can put himself in my shoes and imagine what I must be going through.

Meet Chick Best—a middle-aged self-absorbed, disaffected, California dot.com millionaire. Other than his house and high-priced foreign cars, Chick’s most expensive possession is his trophy wife. Evelyn is good at spending Chick’s money, money that has pretty much run out. Another problem is his drug-addled sixteen-year-old daughter, Melissa. Though concerned about his life and family, Chick has resigned himself to a miserable state of acceptance. That is, until he, Evelyn, and Melissa take a Christmas vacation in Maui. With this, Chick’s life changes...

Chick experiences unrequited love at first sight when he observes Paige Ellis emerging from the hotel swimming pool. His obsession, exceeded only by his need to possess her, isn’t diminished when he learns that she is happily married. Instead, he befriends Paige and her near-perfect husband, Chandler. A short time later, back from Hawaii, Chick’s obsession compels him to drive to Paige’s house, where he runs down and kills Chandler in a drugstore parking lot. But this is just the beginning of Chick’s nightmare as his life spirals homicidally out of control, resulting in the destruction of everything he holds dear.

I enjoyed this novel so much that I brought two more copies to give to others. The author wrote this book in a way that you could actually relate and feel what the character was going through. The main character is just simply a mess. He is the type of person who doesn't see what he is doing wrong and that is what kept this novel going. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone I believe could handle the novel!

I bought 40 books to complete my collection by S. Cannell, M. Connelly, J. Patterson, & J. Wambaugh. I haven't read all of them yet, but these guys have never disappointed, and I don't think that they ever will. That's why I read them.

I'm a huge Cannell fan and this was just terrible. I admit I am not a fan of black comedy .. like the movie "war of the roses". People offing each other so they can fulfill a dream does not make for likable characters. If I can't relate to the protagonist and understand his rationale or his sociopathy then what is the point? His wife is a bitch, his daughter is a biker-chick, his business is failing, boo hoo. So he goes and kills a perfectly decent man so he can have a new wife??? I made it to page 52 and skipped to the end to see if the book had any redeeming qualities...none. I choose my books very carefully because my free time is very precious to me. So once I've invested the money and time I usually finish a book sometimes just to further my understanding of the author's style. Mr. Cannell, what happened here? You owe me one !

I'm a Shane Scully fan which makes me a Stephen J. Cannell fan so I wanted to read "At First Sight" even though I knew it's a stand alone book. As I began reading it I was dubious about continung, but I'm glad I did. Chick Best is not an appealing protagonist but I wanted to continue reading just to see how it all came together and ended. I do recommend this book.

It was good but predictable. As always, Cannell writes for a fast read. He keeps the reader turning pages to see what happens next.

OK...I knew going before picking this book up that it was not a Shane Scully book. I am a huge fan of Stephen Cannell's work, and figured it had to be good anyway. Without giving anything away, I was ready to put the book down for good about 1/4 of the way through. The part that turned me off the most was when the main character bought a Penthouse magazine. No, I am not against porn, but if you read this book, you will know what I am talking about! I felt like a spectator watching a train wreck about to happen; I couldn't turn away! If that's what Mr. Cannell wanted to accomplish, he succeeded! I read the book pretty fast after that part, because I spent a lot of hard earned dollars to buy this book and darn it, I was going to get my money's worth! Needless to say, overall, I felt the book deserved 4 stars as it was slow going for the first 80 or so pages (my usual cut-off is 50 pages!) I hope he got this out of his system (can I have Andrew Klavan's e-mail address please?!!-read the author's acknowledgements)...and I really hope his next book brings back Shane and his gang!

So, was I glad I bought this book? Probably....you can be the judge for yourself...
