I have no idea what Nevada Barr's personal spiritual beliefs may be, but her character, Anna Pigeon, does not believe in god and makes no bones about it. So if you're a believer, and sensitive to those who don't, it's best to steer clear as you won't appreciate some passages in the book. Because I live in the South West and have been to the Guadalupe mountains, I enjoyed the descriptions of scenery, plants, and animals. It is the first book of the Anna Pigeon books.

Burilar
This book was published under two titles, and so I bought both of these books. It is also published under the title: "Ill Wind". I wish that the publishing companies, or whoever decides what title to use, would stay consistent. Probably this book was published in England and in America.

Be warned that this book also appears under the title Ill Wind.
Mesa Verde National Park is the setting, a former city of cliff dwellers who deserted the area when the climate changed and the land dried up. A body is found in a ceremonial kiva and, early in her law enforcement career, Ranger Anna Pigeon is taking direction from more senior rangers who never deal with dead bodies. Mainly they photograph the body from all angles and contact the police. An FBI agent shows up and it goes downhill from there.
Anna was widowed young and has a drinking problem as a consequence, but it doesn't often rear its head in the books as she doesn't have a bar down the street. Anna progresses to a long and increasingly good series each in another national park.
The setting is fascinating and we can feel the heat rippling off the red rocks.
The first in the series is Track of the Cat which is more wildlife-oriented.

Another good Nevada Barr mystery, also released as "Ill Wind"
