What one is left with after the Texts for Nothing is nothing, incorporeal consciousness perhaps, into which Beckett plunged afresh in English in the early 1950s to produce a tale rich in imagery but short on external coherence. From an Abandoned Work deals with three days in the life of the unnamed narrator, an old man recalling his childhood. For the opening of All Strange Away Beckett would delete the first three words of the sentence above, but A closed space ( Closed place opens Fizzle 5 ) would come close to describing the creative terrain that Beckett’s short fiction would thereafter explore.

One for the Road book. This is a chilling study of power and powerlessness  . I am reading a lot of books with totalitarian and fascist themes lately - a sign of the times, I suppose. I really think we are on the edge of a nightmare - a new Dark Age which may encompass the globe as a whole. There's a small consolation that we may blow ourselves up before we reach that stage, so the agony would be mercifully short. I have been hearing about this play for a long time, and wanting to read it. Today I googled it on a whim and found a copy online.

Beckett knew something about displacement-the fear, the hope, the cold stink of madness and loss. Born into a middle-class family in Foxrock, Ireland, in 1906, he was the second son of a genial surveyor and his critical, controlling wife. Beckett is not such a difficult artist to absorb if one listens; his meaning is there in the chopped-up wordplay, in the speech that is both philosophical and mundane. But here all one can hear is McKellen’s and Stewart’s grand English voices. For the playwright, we are all like figures in the Book of Common Prayer, fighting against calamity, believing in a world without end, because we must. How we get through it is up to us-and God.

From the bottom of your heart. Will you pour me one for the road?
