This is a short book of hikes in the Austin area and for the price and brevity, it is what it is. I liked the map of the Austin area that had numbers representing where each of the hikes is. It is a very basic book: there are 20 hikes and no pictures. Most of the hikes are clustered around Austin, but there are 2 or 3 outliers as far as 30 miles away.

Each of the hikes has useful information, such as hiking time, distance, best season, etc., but it would be better if the book had lists that helped group hikes by feature. For example, “best summer hikes,” “best dog friendly hikes,” “best hikes with kids,” “waterfall hikes,” etc. That way, depending on what you were hoping to get out of a hike, you could quickly make a choice based on feature.

One thing that kind of irked me was that all but 3 of the hikes were 3 miles or shorter. One was actually 0.7 miles. All of the hikes were under 4 miles in length. This was my own fault – the book is called “best EASY day hikes…” I should have known better. I think I would have liked it better if the driving distance was up to an hour away and if there were some options for longer hikes. I will probably keep it because I have kids so shorter hikes are good, but I was disappointed. I have had hiking books that make you excited to get out and go hiking – this was not one of them. It was more of a short reference book. I wouldn’t pay more than $5 for it.

Descriptions are really useful--I know enough about the terrain from the author's descriptions to know NOT to choose what seems to be an easy 3-mi Sat morning hike when it's actually very hilly and difficult. Thanks, Keith!

I purchased this book for a friend who enjoys hiking. He called shortly there after to thank me for giving him this book, and to let me know he was wasting no time exploring some of the exciting trails in Austin. I would definitely recommend this book to other hiker enthusiasts.

This was a gift for friends moving to Austin. It is easy to read and easy to locate places. I predict heavy use of this book.
