Moon guides are good books. Their series of state guides always maintains a certain standard, but sometimes the material is spread so thin that it leaves you unsatisfied. That's the way I feel about this guide.

Yes, all the major tourist draws are here, but the off-the-beaten-track treasures that really make Pennsylvania unique are not. For example, the Lehigh Valley and the string of lovely Cumberland Valley towns southwest of Harrisburg don't make the guide at all. For readers interested in these parts of the state, this book will be a disappointment.

Other than the omissions, the organization and general presentation of the guide is very good. I would recommend it to travelers not otherwise familiar with the state, or for first-time visitors. For tourists looking for more cultural and historical depth, there are better books.

This is a good book to travel and see the sights of Pennsylvania. It has black and white photos throughout and tab markings on the page edges to help you find the various regions. There are maps that are adequate to help you know where things are and a detailed index.

Information is given on planning and lists for the best, interest for the kids, ride the railroads, weekend getaways, the battlefields, travel info, tips for travelers, suggested resources and readings.
Guidance is given to plan your time and places of interest, accommodations, food etc. All have addresses, phone numbers, hours and prices. Lists of entertainment, shopping, accommodations, places to eat and how to get around are all detailed as to what is there and available. There are many good ideas for festivals and events.

This is an extremely detailed book both for first time visitors and for anyone even living in and near the state. My grandson has especially appreciated all the ideas for places to ride railroad trains, of which there are many in this state.
