Learn to set up, manage, and administer a Drupal Web site

Drupal offers unparalleled flexibility for content-managed Web sites, but most Drupal books are written for expert developers. Drupal For Dummies shows you the fast, fun and easy way to get going with Drupal, set up a site, apply templates, use modules, and more, even if you have no programming experience.

Drupal For Dummies shows you how to take advantage of everything in Drupal that is ready to use, demystifying what may appear to be a complex set of tools.

Drupal is a free, open source modular framework and content management system designed for content-managed Web sites Learn how to download Drupal, install the LAMP stack, and set up a site; no programming experience required Organize and create your site's content; apply templates, and get your first site up and running Use modules and third-party templates Follow plain-English instructions for site management, including making changes across the site and managing user access and privileges

Drupal For Dummies is designed to help the non-programmer who simply wants to turbocharge a blog or is responsible for administering a content-managed site.

User reviews
Drupal for Dummies is an excellent introduction to Drupal. Ms. Beighley's writing style is refreshingly clear and concise. This is the third book on Drupal that I have read in the past few weeks, and I wish it had been my first. While I cannot judge this book from the perspective of someone with no previous exposure to Drupal, I did find it to be well-written and an excellent review of material I have read elsewhere. I was pleased that the author includes instructions on backing up a Drupal website, as this information was lacking in the first Drupal book I read. (See my review of Sams Teach Yourself Drupal in 24 Hours)

I have installed Drupal on my desktop computer using first BitNami, and then WAMP, and ran into complications that sent me to the Drupal forums for solutions. At one point in reading Drupal for Dummies, I thought the book to be perhaps a little too optimistic, but then Ms. Beighley did point out that the reader may need to seek help elsewhere to overcome difficulties with installing Drupal. For a localhost installation, the author recommends XAMPP. I wonder if I could have avoided problems if I had tried XAMPP first.

I should disclose that I did not do the hands-on exercises in the book. I read Drupal for Dummies after working through several chapters of Using Drupal so I didn't feel the need to repeat procedures that I had already done. I did, however, read all of the exercises in Drupal for Dummies and found them to be very well presented.

A book cannot be both concise (and cheap) and comprehensive. Drupal for Dummies is concise. If you decide that you are serious about pursuing web development with Drupal, Drupal for Dummies will not be the only Drupal book you will buy, but it is an excellent introduction and a real bargain.
As Drupal newbies, we needed a place to start that would be as painless as possible. Let's face it, as a mature, open source CMS solution it's very deep. As tech professionals we have a lot of familiarity with Adobe web dev products but zero with Drupal, until now.

We wanted to explore Drupal because it is so mature, scalable and, well, amazingly cool. This book is a great starting place for everyone. It's an easy read and we read it cover to cover first before installing and developing a Drupal e-commerce website. The authors are completely up front about how deep Drupal is and that their book barely scratches the surface. Even so...

Drupal for Dummies is the recipe book to get started SUCCESSFULLY and actually build a functioning Drupal 7.xx website. Along with all of the steps in this book, the authors point the user to extraordinarily useful resources on the web. These include the complete and correct installation of everything needed to run and develop with Drupal, find snap in modules and well-developed themes, use Drupal specific web hosting providers or how to upload a Drupal website to the web hosting company of your choice, among hundreds of others correct and useful Drupal tips.

We followed the book and used Acquia DAMP to install without a hitch. Read the book and you'll understand how installation is the hardest part of Drupal; these authors know their stuff. After following this book, we are now confident enough to explore as much of Drupal as possible. Oh, yah, the nifty tips on how to preserve databases or experiment with themes before you blow up Drupal are worth their weight in gold.

Yah, ok, the great tips are basic. But, the height of the pinnacle is dependent on the width of the base. Gotta learn to walk before you run. These 'basic' tips include things like terminology (Drupal has its own),theme customization, building blocks, user management, building a storefront and more.

Once anyone works through this book and sits in front of a completed Drupal website, it's time to go out into the big world wide web and explore Drupal to its fullest. Join the Drupal communities and contribute to this amazing open source content management system. Admittedly, we won't be upgrading to Adobe's cloud and endless fee solution after this experience. Drupal for Dummies and Drupal totally rock!

Thank you Lynn & Seamus for putting together this book.
in waiting
I had heard that Drupal has a steep learning curve but this book made it easy as pie to get up and running with Drupal. I was a raw newbie to Drupal when I opened up this book. By the time I had finished it, I had created a fully functioning and elegant storefront, a blog, a forum, and an image gallery. I had added RSS feeds, social media feeds, contact forms, and many other very cool items to my various Drupal installations that I set up while I was reading this book. Drupal is open source so all of this stuff is free. Before I had even finished this amazing clear book, I was using a Drupal module called Spread that enabled readers of one of my promotional eBooks to forward links to a download of the eBook to their friends through email with just two clicks. Maybe the eBook will go viral because of that great little Drupal module! What makes this Drupal book stand out is its crystal clarity and the many useful project the author Lynn Beighley puts the reader through. If you want to start from scratch and get up and running with Drupal as fast as possible, you're looking at the book that will get you there! This book is EZ!
First off, I have never really been a fan of the whole "for dummies" franchise. I sort of felt insulted having to read one...

This book is the first of several I bought in order to learn Drupal and since I knew nothing about it, I believed the reviews others had given. I am glad I listened to those reviews, because this book literally walks you through the installation and then on through setup and into design. None of the other books spent any time on the installation, but this book provides plenty of details and a walk-through. After that, it uses some good examples to introduce the reader to as many parts of the CMS as possible without going into too much detail. For what it is, this book is a good entry level guide to Drupal and will familiarize you with the terms, setup, and layout as well as get you started with some basic theming.
