This book is an introduction to 3D with Maya as the software package. It provides plenty of discussion on various 3D topics including modeling (polygonal, NURB and organic), rendering, lighting, and character rigging. Nonetheless, the majority of the pages are dedicated to hands on tutorials. overall i think this book is great. if you think 3d animation is neat and something you wouldnt mind learning, stop right now.

Maya Animation Rigging Concepts is one of the few Maya-centric books that covers this topic in great detail. Most chapters focus on CGI effects and how you can recreate them in Maya. Unfortunately the examples in this book aren’t very creative and they don’t feel like real projects. It’s specifically geared towards aspiring animators and modelers who want to work in the animation industry. It’s not a particularly deep subject to learn, however it can be very confusing when you first get started. But since this is a more advanced book you should already have some experience designing your own characters and/or environments by now.

I placed my order when I was in Siggraph and picked it up only recently. It certainly looks better than before! This book is very informative and easy to follow. The theory part tends to be academic and so is a little dry. But it explains to the point about those things like noise, octaves, render, light etc. If there is something I want to bark about, it's give me MORE theory. The author seems to have a way to arose your interest but stop at the point when u get really excited and want to know more. The tutorials are well organized. I managed to get a really cool fire effects out from the first two tutorials. But if this is your first Maya tutorial, better not jump pages. You'll sure hit the walls. This book is not a spoon-fed book. So you got to tickle your brain a little and analyze some TASK and NOTES. I find the method of presentation VERY useful and informative for me. One place you will want to visit is the book's website (4deffects.com). There are some useful info and updates. Overall I think it is more than worth my money that I spent attending some useless CG classes in downtown!
I'm a student taking some graphics and animation courses. I bought this book for study of Maya since my school teach maya. Before I read the book I dont have any idea of production. But now, I got a much better idea of what happens in production. I agree that Maya is just a tool. And there are many things needed for a real work in a production environemnt. One thing about the book, I think the publisher did not do a good job by editing it. Also, whoever proofed read the book must be half asleep. This cause the book with several errors. But lucky the book is still contain good stuff. In conclusion, I recommend it to people who like to learn effects animation, especially using Maya to do effects and especially if you are student like me.
This book is painful for people who do not know Maya and it is practically useless for those who do. People somewhere in the middle may learn a thing or two, but overall I believe this to be a waste of money. If you have the program, you have the manuals, and they will play a better role in helping you with Maya than this book. The front cover is a testament to the rushed nature of this book, and the almost careless attitude with which it was released. The art samples, done in Maya from some of the tutorials in it, are [bad], and as soon as I saw the cover I became very nervous about the hard-earned money flying out of my pocket to the land of lost cash. In dire need of extensive re-writing.
The book is very good teaching Particles, but there are better tutorials online. It was written for Maya 2.5. So, if your using Maya 3 or 4, there's parts changed.
I was required to buy this book for a class at RIT, I recommend anyone who is required to buy the book for a class or any sorts to see if someone else has the book. Because, spending money on an old tutorial book and getting frustrated is a no no, when your trying to learn a new program.
Hopefully, there will be an updated book in the future, now Maya has become a powerful particle tool.
Perhaps this book deserves two or three stars, but I felt I had to offset the bizarre five star reviews that this book has been getting. Some of the techniques might be useful, but the final results of the tutorials are not worthy of the potential of Maya (except the cake tutorial). Most of the expressions don't work if you type them in straight from the book, and the printed screenshots border on useless. It would have been nice to have a little more explanation on WHY a certain shader utility was used or a certain expression, instead of just following the instructions. This is sure to be a favorite among warez users because of the lack of Maya documentation available though.
This book is more suitable for intermediate and (maybe) advance user. For beginner, I suggest that you stick with the manuals. Only buy this book if you are already experience in Maya. I agree with the comment that the editor and proof-readers of the book did not do a good job. So, you will expect to see mistakes here and there. But you should get the latest updates from the book's website. If you're experience, you will be able to spot the mistakes and carry on with the tutorials. But if you're beginner, I wish you good luck! For effects wannabe, this book does present a good overall idea of what to expect and how to use Maya to work out those effects. Pretty decent!
This is a good overview of the fundamentals in technical animation. A good link in both basics and practical production. If the images are in color, that will be even more wonderful!
This is an alright book with miss printed error like those that said below. If you know maya, it's quite good. But if you dont, it can be painful.
