The book does have some good information. However it is overly written using bulleted lists, which gives the feeling of an instructional manual than a text book. Many chapters I barely read because it seemed pointless to gain information from lists.
Plus the book is ten years old, and multimedia and technology has changed a lot in the past ten years.

There are some good examples of multimedia projects here, but this was not a book I decided to keep once I moved from graduate school into the "real world". There are plenty of examples available online, and this one didn't stand out enough for me to consider it worthy of collecting dust on my small bookshelf at work.

This book was required for the course of study I was (then) involved with. It was complete in coverage -well written, and certainly functional from a class requirement perspective.

There were more updated info on the web that I rarely used this book. I think it is difficult to get updated info from a book as there is so much that is constantly updated online.

This book does cover in-depth the different types and functions of multimedia in instructional design. The information is relevant and useful; however, it is poorly presented. It is cheaply printed, even the covers. The sheer amount of plain text and bulleted lists is mindnumbing. Some images are present, but many seem arbitrary and extraneous, serving no instructional purpose. Others would be more useful if they were of better quality and in color. In fact, only 10 images in the entire book are in color, and 5 of these are on the covers. One is the author's photo.

The book lacks any supplementary multimedia component in either CD-ROM or website form -- which is both strange and disappointing in a multimedia text, particularly one written for educators.

The book extolls the virtues of image quality, presentation, use of multimedia, etc... but it falls woefully short of following its own advice.

This is an essential guide for instructional designers considering adding mulitmedia to their course. This book introduces the different media categories, explains how each medium rlates to learning and describes how media can affect a learner's motivation. Media selection is an integral part of course design and requires careful and researched consideration. This book does all that for you. Further,the strengths and weaknesses of each medium are presented and the book also provides considerations on selecting media and on transferring materials into other formats.
