Does your middle or high school student struggle with sensory challenges? A Buffet of Sensory Interventions: Solutions for Middle and High School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders offers a smorgasbord of sensory-based interventions for use by educators, occupational therapists and parents. This practical and well-researched tool is unique because it focuses on middle and high school students, whose sensory needs are often overlooked. For this age group, the author emphasizes the importance of fostering independence, self-advocacy and self-regulation as a way to for teens with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to take ownership of their sensory needs as they transition into adulthood. Using simple terminology and illustrations, the book also explains sensory basics, describes the sensory systems, discusses sensory challenges experienced by those with ASD, and helps develop daily educational interventions through assessment of sensory needs. Parents and educational team members working with teens with ASD will benefit from adding this resource to their library.

This book provides insight on differences in sensory processing challenges related to older students for parents and professionals. The entire first chapter (40 pages!) reviews differences between Sensory Modulation Disorder, Sensory-Based Motor Disorder, and Sensory Discrimination Disorder, which was helpful as a behavioral professional. General information provided is detailed, but understandable for professionals without a sensory background, as well as family members. Processing time for different sensory systems is reviewed, helping to develop understanding of why activities or exposure may influence a student so many hours later.

Scenarios and examples of sensory programs are included for a range of students, and informal assessments are provided in the appendix. The familiar, "Sensory Gang" characters are used in this book, as discussed in Asperger Syndrome and Sensory Issues: Practical Solutions for Making Sense of the World. Each sensory system is addressed, along with examples of hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity symptoms and practical, recommended activities. The book stresses the value of including an occupational therapist (OT) on the student's treatment team, but also acknowledges the value of including the adolescent or young adult, family, and other professionals to create a comprehensive plan that addresses sensory needs and decreases the impact of negative, or stigmatizing, behaviors.

As a behavioral professional, this book was interesting and will be helpful in working with occupational therapists to identify replacement behavior targets for adolescents with sensory needs. The book provides in depth information, while still being readable, at only 150 pages. Additionally, I appreciated the inclusion of sample programs, communication forms, assessments, and other material that can easily be adapted for use by a treatment team in the appendix.
