What does a grade mean anyway? Is it a true "measurement" of your mastery of the standards? My son is a standout athlete but he has an "F" in PE this 9 weeks. Why? Because he needed time to do his Algebra homework and skipped out of running the mile a few times so he got some zeroes. Later each day; however, he ran a few miles in basketball practice. Isn't this like having several doctor appointments where they measure your weight at each scheduled appointment but if you miss an appointment they record your weight anyway as 0 pounds and then claim your average weight over all the visits is 40 lbs. less than your actual weight?

Another day my son got an "F" on a true/false test because he wrote "T" for True and "F" for False instead of writing out the whole word. Did the recorded "measure" on this test tell me anything about how well he mastered the content? Not a thing.

In the above examples, we need ways to report on behavior related to time management and following directions but we also need ways to understand exactly what a grade in PE or history is telling us. How can we accomplish both? Ken O'Conner addresses this challenge and many more as it moves us toward a paradigm shift in our thinking about grading.

A great read to support learning as sometimes educators only practice "assessment of learning" and "assessment as learning" but have a tendency to consider "assessment for learning" as unfair or impractical or a dumbing-down of the material.
