We have a large collection of fairy tale picture books and multiple versions of many stories so it is not small thing to say that this is our favorite. I had to purchase a second copy so that both of my daughters will have one when they depart the house someday. The story of the 12 dancing princesses is retold very well. There are some of the fairy tales we own that make me groan out loud at being requested to read them aloud but I don't mind reading this one over and over again. It is beautiful and rolls off the tongue well.

And if that doesn't do it for you, there are the pictures! Jane Ray is a favorite illustrator of mine and I swoon over the rich color, folk art style, and beautiful details. The deep hues are accented perfectly with gold. Jane Ray is magic and she brings it to her work. I can imagine sitting in a whole room of the house with murals painted by her and it would be my escape. Her illustrated characters have an exotic quality to them that I can't get enough of. I am sad that this is one of her stories that is out of print. I would buy it more often for gift giving. Another favorite of ours done by Ray is the Apple Pip Princess, so check it out.

I love the illustrations in this book, the pictures are classy and romantic. reminds me of medieval times and a bit Ottoman empire. I am not an artist so I can't say where Kay Nelson got his inspiration. . the only thing that I was a bit disappointed about is, I expected the pictures of that story to be within the story. So when your reading the 12 dancing princesses you can look at the pictures as you read. But all the pictures are in the middle of the book, like you would see in a historical book. I was hoping the pics would be with it corresponding story. other than that I really like it.

This book has been a hit with our K-3rd grade girls. It introduces them to a "princess" tale they are unfamiliar with. The colorful illustrations really capture their imaginations and keep them interested in the story. The story line is not to difficult, and the CD really helps with the Hi/Lo reader. Not quite the Disney style princesses, but enough to get them to look at other versions of the stories they love.

My daughter (age 4) is a big fan of the Barbie movies. I admit, they are surprisingly well-made, but I like to make sure she knows that Barbie did not invent many of those stories, so Santa gave her this book last Xmas. She loves it, and it hasn't diminished her joy in the movie at all, only added to it. The illustrations are lovely.

I honestly just got this book because I was so interested in Kay Nielsen. It was definitely worthwhile! This gives me the chance to really drink in these illustrations; and they never get old.

As a child, and young adolescent, I couldn't get enough of the fairy tale world created by the art of Kay Nielsen. Now, as an adult, I find myself drawn in again and it's all as magical as it was 40 years ago.
I had saved this book since I was a child. It was getting rather ragged from loving use. I was glad to find this gently used collector's item. It is gorgeous.
