Daniel Odier is a teacher of Kashmiri Tantra and a Chan Master from the Chao-chou Lineage. Special Guest: Daniel Odier.

The author reveals his passionate experiences with a female Tantric master who taught him the suppressed practices of her ancient order. In 1968 Daniel Odier left Europe for the Himalayas, searching for a master who could help him go where texts and intellectual searching could no longer take him. He wanted everything: the wisdom and spirituality gained from the life of an ascetic and the beauty, love, and sensuality of a life of passion. He found both in Shivaic Tantrism, the secret spiritual path that seeks to transcend ego and rediscover the divine by embracing the passions. In an isolated Himalayan forest Odier met Devi, a great yogini who would take him on a mystical journey like none he had ever imagined. At times taking him beyond the limits of sexual experience, at times threatening him with destruction, she taught him what it is to truly be alive and to know the divine nature of absolute love. This is the personal memoir of one of France's most honored writers. Tantrism is the only ancient philosophy to survive all historical upheavals, invasions, and influences to reach us intact by uninterrupted transmission from master to disciple, and the only one to retain the image of the Great Goddess as the ultimate source of power.

I picked up Tantric Quest while I was also reading a more scholarly work that required a great deal of concentration. A Tantric Quest is presented as the author's own path to realisation, and his discovery of Kashmir Shaivism. The philosophy is delivered within the story as his teacher, Devi, unfolds it to him. I found it charming, and a welcome relief from more academic presentations of philosophy. Furthermore the volume places philosophy firmly within the bounds of practice. Knowing all the theory in the world will never obtain True Knowing.

Read the book 3 times in the last week. It is changing the way that I live. I am a university professor who is very comfortable with things of the mind.... and have given very little thought to the importance of the body. This book has changed all that. Now throughout the day I take 10 seconds here and 10 seconds there to have a pleasant feeling. I try to really savor my food now instead of mindlessly eating. I could go on and on. Since my work is extremely busy, I love the idea of combining my spirituality with all that I do.

One of the best books I've read. I purchased this as required reading in a tantra course I took.

The lessons from this book are quite counter cultural, as it is very much about rejecting nothing about ourselves, connecting to the inner divine and living and experiencing unabashedly. This is not for the meek, and at times I feel way to meek to follow this, but there is a beautiful aliveness and clarity when I feel aligned with it, when my heart is especially open, like during ecstatic dance or during pranayama/clarity/holotropic/quantum light type breath work or in especially welcoming community. I want to embody this more, but am still quite attached to paycheck, security and relationship, and that seems to be a different paradigm.

An amazing account on author's authentic Tantric journey. Information in this book greatly enriched my understanding and practical application of the Tantric teachings. I have this book as a gift to a number of people and they absolutely loved it.

In this story of his personal spiritual quest to find a Tantric master, Odier, a young man, wanders through India where an unusual, sometimes disastrous, sequence of events leads him deep in the forest to yogini Lalita Devi. Over a period of months, Odier undergoes a series of trials, tests, and rituals of purification that culminate in a sacred sex initiation in which he experiences the awakening of the kundalini, and the joining of the divine forces of Shiva and Shakti.

Well-written, entertaining, enlightening read of a remarkable tale. Highly recommended. (I think it's a great book for 20-somethings to read, too. I know, not all of them will be ready for it, but for some it will resonate and broaden their spiritual horizons.)
Beautiful story
