Series: Marshalls paperbacks. He certainly makes it very clear that the way we do things today is not the way the ancients did things! The title is a little misleading though, because this book is not about creation.

Still, I believe that this book should be compulsory reading for any student in Theology. Oct 21, 2012 Jim rated it really liked it. Pretty amazing information on how Genesis was written. Dipped a little into some marginal sources, but overall really enhanced my perspective on the authenticity of Genesis.

Mackey The JEDP documentists were right to claim that the Book of Genesis was compiled from a variety of sources and documents. But they were wrong regarding the nature of these sources. Genesis was in fact the history of the great pre-Mosaïc patriarchs. The great contribution of Wiseman to the subject of the literary composition of the Book of Genesis was that he was able to identify the very sources (or documents) of which Genesis is actually composed.

This book is one of the best I have ever read. On the basis of what was recovered from the library of Nineveh, the author shows how ancient documents were constructed. He explains how and where authorship and dates were recorded, and how document-order was arranged. He certainly makes it very clear that the way we do things today is not the way the ancients did things! The title is a little misleading though, because this book is not about creation. Still, I believe that this book should be compulsory reading for any student in Theology. It is much more helpful than the theories of Dr. Schleiermacher, and if that eminent scholar would only have access to the information touched on in this book, he would not likely have proposed his 4 sources ideas.

This is the book that initiated the tablet theory for the authorship of the Book of Genesis. Extremely important work. Key concepts: toledoth, colophons, no pre-historic men...Adam wrote the second of eleven tablets used to construct the Book.
