This review is for 'The King of the Shadow Realm; Aleister Crowley: his life and magic' by John Symonds, pub. by Duckworth, 1989.

I have just recently finished reading this lengthy hardcover tome and must say that it carries a lot of weight, figuratively and literally! Its a big book, 588 pages w/ the index. It covers the Master Therion's life from birth to death and truly gives a great deal of insight into this amazingly complex and outrageous personality. It reveals his habits (like drugs and biting ladies upon their wrists!), his sex magickal workings with a seemingly endless array of lovers, male & female, and a LOT of his Thelemic philosophy & magick.

There are lengthy quotes from A.C.'s own diaries as well as those of his Scarlet Women and other disciples. The greatest events & relationships of his life are covered in much detail as we follow 666 around the world and meet a colorful range of characters. Including the college years, his mountain climbing expeditions, the drama surrounding the Golden Dawn, the Abbey of Thelema in Sicily (& what happened there) and the resulting expulsion by Mussolini. The book follows A.C., after his scandalous exile, into Tunisia & Paris & England. The last years are also ,covered including the legal issues, and the writer gives his own personal account & impressions of meeting this most remarkable man at the end of his days.

The bald facts are given along with some legends to weave an intimate portrait. The author does reveal the man (love him or hate him)as he truly was, but without giving TOO much of his own opinion of Crowley (which is less than shining, but generally respectful). All in all, a well-written & researched quality bio that is a required read for Crowley-philes & Thelemites.

Quite the keepsake...
I understand that a special edition of this volume included extra photos, etc.
... also includes one of Crowley's best quotes, which I have not seen anywhere else:
