Witches and Witch-Hunts:. has been added to your Cart. Wolfgang Behringer establishes the importance of a truly global history of witchcraft.

Witches and Witch-Hunts:. Setting aside familiar Western notions, he deploys a more comprehensive definition of witchcraft as the malicious use of evil magic. He brilliantly sketches the history of European witch-hunting and uses this to illuminate the twentieth-century struggle against witches in many parts of the post-colonial world such as South America, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.

Witch-hunts are practiced today throughout the world. While an unknown problem in vast parts of the Western population, body-counts of modern witch-hunts by far exceed those of early-modern witch-hunting.

Drawing on the latest historicaland anthropological findings, Behringer sheds new light on thehistory of European witchcraft, while demonstrating thatwitch-hunts are not simply part of the European past. Althoughwitch-hunts have long since been outlawed in Europe, othersocieties have struggled with the idea that witchcraft does notexist. As Behringer shows, witch-hunts continue to pose a majorproblem in Africa and among tribal people in America, Asia andAustralia.
