Sharon L. ISBN-13: 978-0521408738. Having taught introductory statistics for over six years, one of the best texts I've used is Weinberg and Goldberg's "Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences". Students have found the book easy to understand without a feeling of condescension. Definitely a text to provide a solid statistical foundation for the first-time stats student or a good refresher for others. Although I've seen and used more recent texts, I come back to this one.

For example, there are both stand-alone texts (. Cyberstats, Utts, 2003) and supplements (. ActivStats: 2000-2001 release, Velleman, 2001) that provide similar instruction. The interactive examples are not as well developed, the depth and breadth of coverage are less impressive, and the interactive materials are not as visually appealing.

Statistics for the Behavioural Sciences presents a complete introduction to both descriptive and inferential statistics using an informal, conversational approach that explains both why certain statistical methods are used, and how certain statistical methods are used, and how and when to apply them.

Statistics for the Behavioural Sciences presents a complete introduction to both descriptive and inferential statistics using an informal, conversational approach that explains both why certain statistical methods are used, and how certain statistical methods are used, and how and when to apply them. Only a basic background in arithmetic and coordinate geometry is required, and an appendix on basic mathematical skills, with sample problems and solutions, is provided. In addition to end-of-chapter problems, a mixed set of review questions is given after every five or six chapters, with solutions provided for all problems. Statistics for the Behavioural Sciences is a substantially revised version of the authors' earlier book.
