Sandra, I have been reading your Big Book of Unschooling and my 11 year old son started to read over my shoulder. When his 8 year old brother asked him what he was reading he replied 'It's this book that helps parents to be awesome.

Sandra, I have been reading your Big Book of Unschooling and my 11 year old son started to read over my shoulder. That just about sums it up! Thank you xxx. -Nicola Wright. I had a hard time narrowing down what in the book I liked the most when you asked me yesterday. But I think it would have to be this: "If your child is more important than your vision of your child, life becomes easier.

Her book, the Big Book of Unschooling, is a collection of those stories, arranged in topical format. It reads like a collection of short stories, rather than a guide or instructional manual to unschooling. I find it is fun to browse through occasionally, even now, when my children are getting older. If you are interested in what life might be like without school, and without all the (often unspoken) rules and attitudes that go with it, then read this book.

Sandra Dodd lives and breathes unschooling. Her family’s unschooling story began in 1991 when her eldest turned five and didn’t go to school. It is well written, thoughtful and I will be referring to it often.

Sandra Adams Dodd (born July 24, 1953, Augusta, Georgia) is an unschooling advocate.

Sandra Dodd’s son, Marty, is right: her Big Book of Unschooling makes an excellent bathroom book. The more I saw, the more persuaded I was that the longterm effects of unschooling are beyond anything any of us expected or predicted. Broken down into small, manageable bits, Sanda Dodd’s Big Book of Unschooling is inspiration waiting for action. Is the book only for homeschoolers - or will other parents find it useful as well? There are ideas any parents could use to help their families feel closer, I suppose, but it will be most helpful to unschooling families.

Dodd has been an active member of the Society for Creative Anachronism for most of the time since joining in the 1970s.

This is a great book on unschooling. I love what she has to say about family life. This book covers just about anything and everything regarding the unschooling life. Great for newbies and seasoned unschooling parents. You can skip around and read what you are needing at the time. :)
This book has inspired me to rethink how we were approaching homeschooling. It's also inspired me to be a better parent and encourage my family to be more peaceful.
Unschooling can seem a little lonely when you are that one family in a sea of schoolers. It's nice to have something to reference. I like the layout of this book because you can digest big ideas in small (usually about one page long) portions. Of course, you could just read this all on her website, but I don't mind having a real book to lead through!
My unschooled kids are grown now. I bought a copy of this book when it first came out, and found it clear, helpful, well-organized and to the point. It's a Big Book, all right, and I read straight through it while our family was on vacation, pausing to read excerpts to my husband. (I'm writing this review on his account, hence the name.)

Like many of my unschooling books, my copy of this one was lent to one of the young moms I meet who ask about unschooling. I hope whichever mom I lent it to keeps it or passes it on, but I want another copy for myself, so I just ordered one. It's well-worth the money. There are a lot of "unschooling" books out there these days. Some of them are poorly written, and it's rather sad that people looking to understand unschooling may begin by reading one of these. I hope they find their way to The Big Book of Unschooling. It's the real deal.
This is a terrific book to read as part of your unschooling journey. It really keeps you in the right mindset and provides new ideas and perspective.
Sandra's book is exactly what I hoped it would be. Each page is like a gentle meditation, deepening my love for and understanding of my beautiful unschooling life. It is well written, thoughtful and I will be referring to it often. Thank you, Sandra!
Little novelty compared to Sandra's website (which is one of the bestbestbest unschooling resources ever), however I am an oldschool type of person and just love to be able to keep it in my hands, to be able to just take it off the shelf and look up a topic I need to look up.
Amazing, life changer. Well written and easy to use.
