Book by Byrnes, Donn . It goes into detail of how every system that makes up the SR-71 came to be, what problems they had, and how they solved them. What was most astonishing to me was how photos were taken ON FILM, then the film was processed, then scanned for display to the back seater, in the aircraft, while flying, ALL IN NEAR REAL TIME!

A great book for us Blackbird aficionados.
We take digital imagery for granted now, but there was no such thing in the late 50s and early 60s when this bird was built.
That's just a very small part o f this book. Any engineer or engineer wannabe should read this book to learn how to solve problems, as well as to learn to respect those that came before - "on the shoulders of Giants" as the saying goes.
Original
Published in 1999, before the flood of declassified documents became available. Nice stories, but very short on substantial details. Not a history, more of a memoir.

...of the Greatest Aircraft since the Wright Flyer. I purchased and read this book shortly after publication ca. 2001. This was the first foray into feeding my fascination with the SR-71. Don Byrnes detailed account of his personal journey into this project is a feast of easy-to-follow explanations and descriptions of the anatomy and physiology of this greatest of mankind's marvels. Mr. Byrnes is also a superb man in all respects; an accomplished Pilot and Veteran, loyal husband... with the exception of his love for the Blackbird. :) As you will plainly see, while reading this work, his love for this aircraft and its systems, his family and country come off the pages in a most intimate relief among most chronicles I have found to date. Don doesn't tell the story of the Blackbird program, he SHARES his experiences with the reader. From 'OxCart's' genesis to the Blackbird's unfortunate early retirement, you will be hooked from the beginning as Mr. Byrnes shares many personal experiences that you can't help but feel that connection with. Although I didn't request it, Don graciously personally autographed my copy with a warm thanks and handwritten greeting on personal letterhead! I was remarkably impressed by this. ...all before i even opened the cover! I am thankful to him for sharing this tremendous part of his life with us who enjoy, and now better appreciate, what the Blackbird truly was...and is. This is certainly a must-read for any Blackbird enthusiast's library.

I had the privilege recently of meeting the author, Donn Byrnes, at an SR-71 forum at the Virginia Aviation Museum, which has one of the magnificient "Birds" on display. I second everything the previous reviewer said about the book. Mr. Byrnes makes everything understandable to the layperson (non-pilots) without oversimplifying to the extent that a knowledgeable reader would be bored. If you're an SR-71 fan, be on the lookout for one of Mr. Byrnes's frequent appearances at the various museums that have Blackbirds on display. He couldn't be more gracious about answering questions and signing autographs.

I bought this book a while ago, and once I started reading I just couldn't stop! Mr. Byrnes gives the reader a unique "inside-the-Black-World-programs" perspective, while giving absolutely amazing explanations on some of the most outstanding engineering feats achieved by those involved with the Blackbird family - the author somehow manages to make complex systems such as the side-looking radar, the optical correlator, the astro-inertial navigation system and so on easy (if I can put it that way...) to understand. It also has the author's own impressions on the program. Simply a must-have!!!! And I have copy signed by the author, who happens to be a real nice man!!!! ;o)
