Underground Clinical Vignettes Step 1: Microbiology II: Bacteriology (Underground Clinical Vignettes Series). by Todd A.

Completely revised by new authors, this Fifth Edition presents 100 patient cases designed specifically to prepare students for clinical vignettes on the USMLE Step 1. Each case proceeds from chief complaint through diagnostic workup and treatment and includes buzzwords in history taking, physical examination, laboratory tests, imaging, and pathology.

This edition's cases give greater emphasis to pathogenesis, epidemiology, differential diagnosis, management, and complications and include radiologic images, photographs, tables, and algorithms. A new two-page format encourages students to read the case presentation and formulate an initial diagnosis before turning the page for the answer. The book ends with twenty all-new board-format questions and answers.

I found this book (and series) to be helpful for Step 1 studying, as well as for some of the comprehensive units, etc. It's a nice format for quizzing yourself or others, and the book itself is small enough to fit in a pocket or to have at the dinner table. My friends and I would read cases to each other and omit details while we were out at dinner, and it definitely helped all of us remember those minute details they seem to like to ask on Step questions. This book isn't enough to learn micro by itself, but it's a GREAT review tool for Step since a lot of the details end up being the buzz words that make or break your ability to answer a vignette on USMLE. I would recommend pairing it with Microbiology II so you can also cover bacteriology (this book covers parasites and viruses, etc). I also recommend other books in the series (especially biochem and anatomy!)

Not really certain that this book helped me with Medical School. I still look at it from time to time but not one of my main resources! I'm an MS2 and I don't think I will be picking it up off of the shelf anytime soon. Sorry.
