JOSEPH A. SCHUMPETER (1883 - 1950) was sometime Professor of Economics at the Universities of Graz, Bonn and Harvard. YASUMA TAKATA (1883-1971) was sometime Professor of Economics at Kyoto and Osaka Universities. In 1965 he received the Bunka Koro-sho (Prize for Contribution to Culture) and in 1971 the Kun-itto (the first class honour) both from the Japanese Government.

In characterizing the Japanese way of business, Professor Okumura has made one of the most significant contributions to the study of economics. Following his study of the conversion of pre-war zaibatsu to post-war groups of enterprises, he investigates the roll of comprehensive trading companies in these groups, the main banking system and the permanent employment system. However, he has been very critical of this way of business, whereas those influenced by him have enthusiastically propagated his theory without reservation. This is the first English translation of his work.

The history of economic thought deals with different thinkers and theories in the subject that became political economy and economics, from the ancient world to the present day in the 21st Century. This field encompasses many disparate schools of economic thought. Ancient Greek writers such as the philosopher Aristotle examined ideas about the art of wealth acquisition, and questioned whether property is best left in private or public hands.

An era of economic globalisation and inward investment has seen much interest in Japanese labour management techniques. The first English edition of this 1964 classic of Japanese economics corrects the misunderstandings which often prevail in this debate, by providing the necessary historical context from the Meiji restoration to the second world war. Professor Hazama debunks the myth that Japanese-style management is inherited from her feudal past, showing the impact of businesses imported from the west after reunification in 1867-68 and how these were amalgamated with a range of Japanese traditions.
