books manage to delight the experts yet are still comprehensible to the general reader, a rare skill in this genre. On this occasion, he has produced what is arguably the best book ever written on strategy. Lawrence Freedman is emeritus professor of War Studies at King's College London. Elected a fellow of the British Academy in 1995 and awarded the CBE in 1996, he was appointed official historian of the Falklands Campaign in 1997. He was awarded the KCMG in 2003. In June 2009, he was appointed to serve as a member of the official inquiry into Britain and the 2003 Iraq War.

Ships from and sold by tabletopart. Freedman has selected some of the best authors and authorities on all aspects of war that I have seen in any one book. I teach a War, Peace and Society course at a small eastern Virginia college and have had several publishers attempt to sell me books for this class. This book stands out among them all AND I didn't go through one of the academic publishers.

Lawrence Freedman's Strategy is clearly a bid for the high shelves, a kind of summation, almost an apologia pro vita sua, a reflection on a vocation. It is a behemoth of a book

Lawrence Freedman's Strategy is clearly a bid for the high shelves, a kind of summation, almost an apologia pro vita sua, a reflection on a vocation. It is a behemoth of a book. The grand design seems to follow Clausewitz's dictum (is there a glimmer of humour here?) that the best strategy in war is to be very strong, first in general, then at the decisive point. It is less a history than a bestiary, or an encyclopedia.

Oxford University Press, USA. Book Format.

War, despite its indisputably horrific nature, has shaped the international system, prompted social and technological change, and inspired the arts. This insightful book captures fully the ubiquitous and multifaceted character of war, featuring accounts by generals, soldiers, historians, strategists, and poets, who consider conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to Bosnia. Firsthand accounts vividly evoke the French infantry experience at Waterloo, a Union-Confederate skirmish at Gettysburg, the reflections of a German seaman at Jutland, one civilian's impressions of the Blitz, the trials of a Japanese doctor in the wake of the Atom Bomb's obliteration of Nagasaki, the confusion of Vietnam, and more. A broad range of questions are addressed: What are the causes of war? Which strategic as well as moral principles guide its conduct, and how have these changed? Has total war become unthinkable? What is the nature of contemporary conflict? How is war experienced by those on the front line? With contributions by leading scholars, and edited by one the most oft-quoted and prolific of military experts, this reader offers a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of one of humankind's oldest and most controversial preoccupations.

Lawrence Freedman is a master at editing. I believe editing is almost as difficult as writing the actual article. When I saw it available on Amazon I jumped at the chance to get this text. My students love the easy and interesting reading. The variety of articles is impressive as they are divided into seven different sections; the Experience of War, total war, ethics, strategies and more. This is a true overview of all of the topics associated with warfare and the consequences of it. There is also a fine bibliography and index. If you are looking for a good general text or reader on the topic of war, this is your book!

Bought this for a class and couldn't put it down. A mixture of essays divided into several categories: The Experience of War, The Ethics of War, The Causes of War, Strategy, as well as sections of war history divided into essays on Total and Limited war. Truly a cross section of war information, the excerpts, memoirs, and essays are very short-- most only a few pages, but always enough to get a clear understanding of the author's point or experience. Wonderful resource for any military or history buff and a great place to start for anyone who's merely interested.

The book was delivered in great, discribed, condition and arrived promptly. I am very satisfied with the transaction, and I would be interested in doing business with the seller again.
