German: A Structural Approach, Fourth Edition, shares the basic aims of earlier editions: developing speaking, reading, and writing, while at the same time giving students a clear understanding of the structure of the language.

Each UNIT consists of several parts. Pattern sentences, grammatical analysis, and practice exercises are subdivided into two or three sections. These are followed by conversations and conversational exercises (including many that prompt personal response and open-ended discussions), reading selections, review exercises, and lists of basic vocabulary. Interspersed in each unit are two or three culture notes. Throughout each unit there are ample illustrations of both cultural and linguistic value.

It presents an excellent method for learning German. Each page is understandable and builds on the previous page. I find it an excellent resource for learning the German language.

This book seems to be marketed as a beginning level textbook, but I personally think that some knowledge of German beforehand would be very helpful. If I were teaching German, I’d use this as a lower intermediate level textbook. This terrific book asks the student to look at the language in a different way. I’m not sure if this approach would be as meaningful in all languages, but with German, this is a great way to solidify what you have learned. German sentence structure is, in certain ways, very strict and often nonsensical to native English speakers. The authors teach the student to study the structure and really understand the reasoning behind it.

I’m an independent learner when it comes to German. I had two years of college German more than 40 years ago and had completed the Baron’s audio course. I had also spent five or six weeks in German speaking countries, so I came to this book with a fairly strong foundation. I found it an excellent review of what I already knew that did not bore me, and the “new” material was presented in such a way that I had one “aha-now-I-understand” moment after another. I was familiar with virtually all of the vocabulary, although I had never felt comfortable with the particles (“doch,” “mal,” etc.). The ability to finally not get thrown by them when I hear them is one of the great things I got from this book. Five stars.

I have studied the German language on and off for nearly 50 years, beginning in high school with the old war horse A-LM German series. At the university that I entered in 1970, the recently published "German: A Structural Approach" was the required textbook for our German courses. In the intervening years, I have found no other German textbook published in the United States that so clearly explains the German language in all aspects--reading, writing, speaking, and listening--and provides any dedicated learner with a solid foundation. I have ordered over the years several copies of this text for home and work! And even though I have enjoyed thoroughly many of the German language textbooks published in Germany for non-German learners, I always return to this one textbook for review and study.

This book is a rara avis for students who wish to really learn German.

Though it was written many years ago, it has never been surpassed for the beauty of its teaching, the deep insight it gives into the patterns of the language and the friendly manner of the authors.

I own the second edition and now this fourth edition. I only wish that the authors had produced more advanced texts, too.

This should be the required textbook for German classes. Students would really learn something valuable.
