Let me say this is amazing in conjunction with the french grammar for dummies book. They kinda bounce off each other which help understanding how to speak and write properly!

For those people who rated and had issues with pronunciation- french isn't a language where you see what you say and it IS a bit difficult in talking verbally (my second language I learned was German and let me tell you it is HARD to avoid saying 'ya sue- is' instead of je suis).

IF YOU NEED HELP PRONOUNCING AND NEED TO HEAR AUDIO

There are really helpful FREE sites to hear people speak french- actual people who speak it not some computer generated voice.
Try Dict.cc it is FABULOUS or also ielanguages.com has listening sections in french !

I will keep it short, simple, and to the point. This is the best short introduction to the French language and an excellent introduction to French grammar. I found this book incredibly well written, very concise and clear in explanation. The author is clearly a gifted teacher and let me tell you, I struggle with grammar, this book makes clear the fog of learning a new language. Whereas I find science and math not difficult and often intuitive a new language is not easy for me; mostly my poor background in English grammar I suspect, more like a swiss cheese with more holes than cheese. This book fills those holes and is short enough to give it more than one careful reading. Practice may not make perfect but it sure helps ... other books have exercises when you are ready to test your learning or spring for a trip to France.

French is a difficult language to learn but this book made it much easier. Thank you.

I bought this book based on comments from a previous reviewer who said it's a perfect book for those of us who took French in school. I took 3 yrs of French in high school, my 50th high school reunion is this year to give you an idea of how long ago that was. It's amazing how quickly I'm able to pick it up again using this book.

This is a useful reference book for someone who studied French at school and wants to pick up the language again in later life. It is giving me a short cut into the language and by using it I find I can remember more than I thought I would. It does not have the annoying bells and whistles that try to be amusing which is affected by some other modern textbooks, just good, solid information.

Missing multiple pages.... pages will start and not have the previous pages so I have no idea what the beginning of a sentence even said. Total missing is about 30 pages
My goal is aquiring some ability to read French for a hobby interest, and this book, together with French For Dummies, with CD (For Dummies (Language & Literature)) and Intermediate French For Dummies have been very useful in my efforts. I really like Laura's French website, and her books are simply excellent.
