An indelible novella, Returning to Haifa combines two historical events in Palestine: May 14, 1948 .

Ghassan Kanafani was a national hero, a literary and political leader whose life was cut short by violence; his booby-trapped car exploded, killing 36-year-old Kanafani and his young niece in 1972. His tragic personal history is certainly as engrossing (and wrenching) as any of his fiction.

Politics and the novel, Ghassan Kanafani once said, are an indivisible case. Fadl al-Naqib has reflected that Kanafani wrote the Palestinian story, then he was written by it. His narratives offer entry into the Palestinian experience of the conflict that has anguished the people of the Middle East for more than a century. In Palestine's Children, each story involves a child a child who is victimized by political events and circumstances, but who nevertheless participates in the struggle toward a better future. Returning to Haifa is one of Kanafani's most wonderful stories! It sheds some light on the events of Palestinian exodus. Of course largely from a Palestinian perspective, although there are some attempts to point to the other perspective. It mixes history, family, love, logic, and destiny all together.

If you are intersted in the story of Palestine beyond the nightly news, start here and then read almost anything by Said.

I really liked this, but there were some things in there that were rather....well, they seemed to encourage the Israel-Palestine conflict, rather than try to make peace. But hey, that's political writing for you.....

A solid collection of short stories. Needed the book for school and it shipped fast. Some of the stories i could do without but overall useful book.
Very nice collection and translation of Kanafani's literature work. Very touching stories that resembles the Palestinian's tragedy during the last century, coming from the most honorable and respected journalist and writer Ghassan Kanafani.
