This is the first in what promises to be an exciting new series of eight volumes devoted to the drawings and paintings of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which purportedly holds some 70 percent of the artist's output. This volume chronicles his early draughtsmanship, providing some 68 colored illustrations of cataloged drawings that clearly show the artist coming to grips with line, value, texture, light, and perspective.
In Nuenen, Van Gogh focused on painting and drawing. to sell his paintings in Paris, his brother responded that they were too dark, and not in keeping with the bright style of Impressionism. Working outside and very quickly, he completed sketches and paintings of weavers and their cottages. From August 1884, Margot Begemann, a neighbour's daughter ten years his senior, joined him on his forays; she fell in love and he reciprocated, though less enthusiastically. They wanted to marry, but neither side of their families were in favour. In August his work was publicly exhibited for the first time, in the shop windows of the dealer Leurs in The Hague.

The third volume in the series of Vincent Van Gogh drawings in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam presents a detailed examination of the body of illustrative work the artist made during his three-year stay in Antwerp and Paris.
The third volume in the series of Vincent Van Gogh drawings in the Van Gogh Museum features his Antwerp and Paris works. He met fellow artists and art dealers, and observed changes in French painting at first hand. At the end of November 1885, Van Gogh went to Antwerp, where he attended lessons in drawing from plaster casts of classical statues at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten. He was also an active member of drawing clubs. While a pupil in the studio of Fernand Cormon, he came into contact with other artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Emile Bernard. He continued to commit his surroundings to paper, as he had in Antwerp.
This painting was completed only two months before Van Gogh executed . But even in that period, his landscape paintings and drawings show his unusual talent for that genre.
