I love Mercedes
I enjoyed this book even though some of the advice seems a little idiosyncratic. Also, it's advice is geared mainly toward traditional publishing (it's from 2001) so Indie writers might need to adapt it to their needs. The style was friendly and the sample story/scenes were engaging. I think it's worth the time of anyone who is interested in writing westerns.

Much better than other how-to-write books I have read. This one is a nuts and bolts book about writing traditional westerns. Dusty Richards both teaches and keeps it fun, super book. This book does not have to be for western writers only, mystery, fantasy and romance writers could all benefit from this book.

There is nobody who knows more about western writing than Dusty Richards. In this book, he brings together the best of the best in historical writers, including Jodi Thomas and Jory Sherman, and puts together a must read for all writers, regardless of your experience. I loved the book.

Writing the West isn't your ordinary "how to write" book. Actually, it's more. Solid, practice advice on writing--applicable to any genre, not just the Western. The guidelines Dusty Richards and the other writers provide can be of immediate value, especially in the editing phase of whatever manuscript a writer has in the works.
