Richard Stone was born in 1913, attended Westminster School, and set out to follow his father’s profession by reading law at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He moved to economics midway through his undergraduate career, and came under the influence of Colin Clark, who was then lecturing in statistics to the economists and who was himself deeply involved in the measurement of national income (see particularly Clark, 1937).
