Being an avid dog-lover from having not gone ONE month in my life without one,the title of the text-book itself caused it to be notable with me!! Recently,a new neighbor on the block left a poor pooch largely unattended in inclement weather, and in its loneliness,it would join my dog and I on our multiple walks throughout the day!! One morning as I walked my dog, this poor, lonely pooch decided to tag-along jumping playfully against the side of my dog as it'd join us on a trot through the neighborhood!!!

Thirty five years since graduating elementary school THIS was the one textbook to NEVER leave my mind!! Another longtime neighbor asked me was the dog mine, and I answered that it wasn't,and that I didn't know its' name,or if it even HAD a moniker, and that all I knew was that it was"The Dog Next Door"!! Just saying these words ellicited fond memories of elementary school!! My dog, since a puppy had this queer/annoying habit of"picking up"any object she'd encounter on our walks and bring them home!!! This odd habit which I'd reprimanded her about since the first time she'd done such, gains her my ire,but reading the nice story about"William"and his dog"Chips"gave me a new perspective on my dogs annoying habit,as the boy stated to the owner of the apartment he'd be soon moving to,that the ban on dogs should be lifted in"Chips"case,as he keeps the area around his home neat and clean by picking UP all the pieces of paper/"litter"on the sidewalk and lawn!!! So now this tale has actually mitigated the displeasure I have toward my dogs habit of picking up objects,as"Chips"habit actually changed the apartment owners mind
about prohibiting dogs
dogs,as "Chips"to her GREAT relief, found her money-bag/wallet she was SO perplexed and distressed about losing while heading downtown to pay some bills, and now,as a show of gratitude, the boy and his family WOULD be allowed to bring his dog to live with him in the apartment building as part of their status as the apartment buildings"Lost and Found Department"!! This book is filled with charming short-stories like this!!!! I' actually learned a lesson about"keeping my cool"and a good presence of mind when face-to-face with imminent peril
as"Scuffie"the field mouse duped a cat from attacking him in a clever, inventive fashion!! How a beaver goes about building itself a dam in a pond is covered in an easy-to-understand fashion. A bear is tricked into dropping the quail it proudly captured and holds in it's mouth by a sly fox,who subsequently explains to its' disheveled dupe,by profoundly explaining how IT would've answered a question withOUT having to even OPEN it's mouth!! A meeting of mice about how to solve their perilous cat-problem taught that discovering what TO do about a delimma is EASY,but to actually DO what needs to BE done is NOT so easy,as the mice try to find a brave volunteer to put the bell ON the cat!! Loved the charming"Crispins' Crispian"account of a dog who belonged TO himSELF highlighted the importance of independence,as he did everything he needed to have done FOR himself!! He meets a little boy of like-mind who belonged to HIMself,so they abode together as good companions who basked in their self-sufficiency!! A touching tale of the out-dated trolley"Puddle Jumper"elicited a smile from me as I read how"Puddle Jumper"and owner"Mr. Mopsey"kept one another up-lifted throughout the day with a greeting of:"Happy Day!!"The stories and illustrations are wholesome and charming, and will provide good reading, and even includes a few,fun educational exercises for kids while teaching the valuable morals each story has to offer!!! I really ENJOYED my trip back to grade-school via this book!!! I recommend it for any pre-teen who enjoys a good story!!!
