The "Roman d'Alexandre " is one of the oldest romances in medieval French Literature. It's written by a certain Alexandre de Paris, probably an unknown copyist. The novel tells the conquests of Alexandre the Great but it was also an early Fantasy novel ( like many of the romances at that time ). In this form this novel already existed in late Antiquity. But during the Middle Ages it became a story with many adventures set in an Oriental environment.

The Book of the City of Ladies, Christine de Pizan (1405). Written by the prolific medievalist Christine de Pizan, The Book of the City of Ladies is an extraordinary work, both for its content and for the fact that it was written by a woman during the Middle Ages. As the art world flourished in 19th century France, so did literary works surrounding the lives of artists and their muses.
