The first six volumes open with a chronology and an overview essay that considers its period in light of six universal themes, such as "technological progress" and "warfare. The last book contains the full texts of 110 primary-source documents, plus a "master" index that includes neither those documents nor, aside from the maps, any illustration entries.

I am especially critical of the world history encyclopedias I read, because having read a great deal of them, I know . I remain somewhat suspicious of any book that claims to be an encyclopedia of the history of the entire world.

Each chapter, introduced by a brief overview of the war or conflict, covers the causes, major figures, and major battles and events of the war as well as the home front, the international context, and the aftermath.
