Concerned strictly with the principles and formalism of quantum mechanics, this graduate student-oriented volume develops the subject as a fundamental discipline. Opening chapters review the origins of Schrödinger's equations and the nature of the solutions in certain simple and well-known cases, advancing to the ideas associated with vector spaces. Having provided students with the appropriate mathematical language, the author proceeds to the formulation of the main principles of quantum mechanics and their immediate consequences. The book concludes with final generalizations in which alternative "languages" or representations are discussed — each with reference to its specific advantages and applications — and the Dirac transformation theory is developed and explained.

The mathematics in this book doesn't follow very clearly. Nor does the discussion of principles illuminate the subject well. There are some good topics, but it is a struggle to understand them. I'd recommend Dirac's Principles of Quantum Mechanics for the formal structure of QM, Goswami for calculations and learning about the motion of wavepackets, and Max Born's Atomic Physics for another viewpoint of group velocity.
Abandoned Electrical
In my experience, text books on Quantum mechanics generally present the subject as a mishmash of seemingly contrived postulates, which they then set about to discuss rather awkwardly. I say 'awkwardly' because one gets the impression that the authors do not properly understand the mathematical machinery which they purport to be using, namely the well understood and well developed theory of Hilbert Spaces; that is, apparently well understood by everyone except physicists.
The book by McWeeny is NOTHING like that! The presentation is delightfully honest and clear.
The ideas are well motivated, and are made accessible to the student with the aid of finite-dimensional examples.
I found the book greatly illuminating, and an excellent investment of money and time if you come from a mathematical background and want to learn the fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics. Enjoy!
