The ocean affects all aspects of our lives-Tom Garrison will show you. Garrison takes you on a vivid exploration of the ocean-from submarine canyons to zooplankton, global warming, the growing plastics problem, and our changing coastlines-and explains oceanography's most important concepts.

Dr. Garrison was an Emmy Award team participant as writer and science advisor for the PBS syndicated Oceanus television series, and writer and science advisor for The Endless Voyage, a set of television programs in oceanography completed in 2003. I have only used it twice to provide additional information.

Garrison's clear and current ESSENTIALS OF OCEANOGRAPHY is based on his bigger Oceanography text. However, unlike competing books, which are simply abbreviated versions of a larger text, ESSENTIALS is crafted specifically to meet the needs of the shorter course, with less biology and a total of 15 chapters.

The 13-digit and 10-digit formats both work.

This revision presents the most current information throughout, including up-to-date information on global warming, as well as an improved and expanded illustration program. In addition, there is increased emphasis on the interdisciplinary nature of marine science. Garrison brings focus to the appreciation of and excitement to the complex nature of the ocean and its interactions with other systems.

It is unfortunate that when reviewing this textbook there are not two pieces to the rating. As far as the author is concerned and how interesting he made this textbook I would give him 6 stars out of 5. One of the best written textbooks I have encountered. The language is simple enough that a non science major can understand. I found the reading of the book a delight, and I was learning much as I progressed.

The publisher should be put in jail as far as I am concerned. Whenever a review question is asked a box marketing cengagebrain.com shows up telling the student to go buy the answers. I discovered if I wanted all the information being presented in this textbook I need to buy the E-Companion for about $60. Paying $200 for the cheaply bound paperback book is evidently not enough. If I had bought the book used I would be more sympathetic to Cengage, but I bought it new from Amazon.

Ultimately I am left feeling like I had been to a seminar that was supposed to teach my something and instead I was told I needed to buy additional services to really learn what the seminar advertised.

What the hey man, I'm expecting to have a PDF show up and I get this Amazon reader crap. I can't read this Amazons stupid book reader because of my disability so I have pdf's read to me via my iMac.

Imagine being a student and not able to study because you want me to buy some proprietary reader that when I do download it won't help me learn.

Um thanks no. Refund Now, I need a PDF.

Got this for a college class and I love the savings and convenience of renting. Saved me lots of $$ this semester! :)

I needed it for my class, and it's doing a good job of being the book I needed for class.

I ordered Essentials of Oceanography as a reference book to expand what I was getting from a Teaching Company Course in Oceanography. I have only used it twice to provide additional information. I was well pleased with what I read on both occasions, but never expect to read it cover to cover.

Paperback textbook arrived in worn state with some writing within and noticeable cover damage but it was legible and all pages and coverings were still attached in place.
I purchased this text as a required reading material for an intro Oceanography class, though the book contained much helpful and interesting information, my professor made powerpoint presentations that were directly from the book. Honestly, I opened this book maybe twice only to search for information that I could have found in the NOAA website. Having stated that, I would also like to say that Earth Science or Marine Biology are not my majors, and the only reason I took that class was to satisfy a tier requirement. To me, it was not a useful book for the price because I found no need for the book in my future but for people who are interested in pursuing those majors, this would be an extremely helpful text to have since it covers important intro information about the ocean and explains basic features of our sea. Though this book was expensive and mostly useless to me, it has an upside since the resell price is very high, I received 80% of the money that I paid for this text when reselling it to Amazon.
