The structure of sugars attached to cells and proteins have been investigated by biochemists for more than a hundred years. The discipline of glycobiology has emerged more recently, as key principles about the biological functions of these complex sugars have been established and their importance for the study of cell biology and immunology has become apparent. Introduction of Glycobiology is the first textbook to present an introduction to the essential elements of glycobiology that is readily accessible to undergraduates and other non-specialists. It focuses on coherent stories about what sugars do for cells and organisms. The importance of glycosylation in protein secretion and stability, cell-cell adhesion and signalling, and innate and adaptive immunity are emphasized and the ways in which glycobiology explains human disease are discussed throughout the book in order to place the subject in a biomedical context. The book is illustrated throughout with all new custom-drawn figures. The simple organization, highlighted terms and annoted key reference lists make the text as readable and accessible as possible.

Needed to learn all of the basics of glycobiology. I am an bioengineering student about to start cellular engineering research involving ligands. My background (for this textbook) is cell biology and organic chemistry 1/2, so I did not take any biochemistry courses. This textbook went through everything I needed to know clearly and efficiently. Highly recommend it.

This served me well as a crash course. I had to learn the basics in a week and this book was just the ticket.

For a 3rd edition, there are simply too many errors. As an example, look at figure 2.3 - there are 2 bonds missing in the phosphate and the isoprene repeat unit of the dolichol only has 4 carbons not the 5 it should. Or consider Fig. 3.6- the color coding used in the legend is B&W but the sugars in the artwork are blue and white. In fig. 4.8, the artwork is uses B&W on a blue background. The lack of consistency is problematic. As an alternative, consider the glycobiology text edited by Varki et al. A uniform and thoughtful coding scheme for sugars is found inside the cover and is used throughout Varki. A great bonus is that Varki's book is on line chapter by chapter.

This book provides an excellent introduction to the fast growing field of glycobiology. Highly recommended for both student and teacher alike!
