Barbara Eustis-Cross and Nancy Bowker have done to educate and inform prospective adopters about the wild horse

As President of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation, as a member of other organizations dedicated to protecting endangered species, and as a horsewoman, I can truly appreciate what Barbara Eustis-Cross and Nancy Bowker have done to educate and inform prospective adopters about the wild horse. This excellent book goes a long way toward helping owners make the adoption a success and it also assures them that the scruffy-looking creatures they take home from the BLM Adoption Center will in time make the transition (if not transformation!) to fit, healthy horses that can be trained for anything: ranch work, trail riding, jumping and even driving.

Nancy Bower, Barbara Eustis-Cross. Provides practical advice on caring for, and training, an adopted wild horse show more.

Eustis-Cross, Barbara; Bowker, Nancy. Much of the book reflects information found in general horse-care manuals. However, the author does center her thesis on the wild horse and its special needs as opposed to a "green" horse that has been raised in a stable. ISBN 10: 0876058470, ISBN 13: 9780876058473. There are major differences in handling and expectations. The introduction gives a brief and interesting history of the "wild horse movement" in America, which started in 1952. Recommended for public libraries. Anne A. Salter, Atlanta Historical Soc.

If your thinking about adopting a Mustang (I have two) this would be a good book to read first. It pretty much tells you what to expect and is loaded with useful information. Mustangs are wonderful horses with very few bad habits, but you must have the time. In my opinion its time well spent.

"The Wild Horse, An Adoptor's Manual" is an excellent guide to gentling a wild horse. Step by step procedures are presented in terms a novice can follow. Illustrations and photos provide clear, concise techniques for approaching the horse, what to do in emergencies, how to re-halter and continue on through leading, training and groundwork. All too often adoptors find they do not know what to do, get discouraged if their techniques don't work, feel they have failed and no longer want the horse in which case both adoptor and horse suffer. Potential adoptors should read this book BEFORE adopting. There are tips on choosing a mustang and preparations for penning and housing are carefully detailed. It is a shame that this book is out of print. Every adoptor should receive a copy when adopting a wild horse.
