I'm not one to leave negative reviews, and I almost didn't leave one here...but I have to admit I was disappointed in this book. It seemed like the author just wanted to get the book done to be the 2nd in the series or something. The first book was wonderful and believable. The characters were true to life and the situations plausible. So I had high hopes going in to this one. But...the 'hero' is anything but, and there is a lot of very descriptive kissing right off the bat, sexual thoughts, etc., so that it leaves you with the belief that the two will get married...until he gives her a stupid reason why they can't. That was frustrating, but more than that is the repeating over and over and over and over of their thoughts. That got quite tiresome. I did read the whole thing, but didn't enjoy it as much as I did the first in the series.
you secret
This is a standalone read with a happy ever after. Set in the 1800's in England the heroine is living at the mercy of her hateful sister and her lecherous brother-in-law. When she refuses his advances, she is thrown out of the house with barely any clothes, money, etc. She goes to her best friend's house and they take her in.

I really enjoyed this story. I read some of the one star reviews and WOW, those folks didn't care for the story. I too read a lot, several books a week, and I found this one to be entertaining. Sometimes books set in the 1800's are a little bit much. I really prefer, cars, cell phones, etc. But for some reason this one was an enjoyable read. It is a case of friends as kids winding up falling in love as adults. It is so weird in this period of time that you could wink at someone and now you are engaged! Just seems weird. But anyway, there is a bit of drama as these two make their way to a HEA. I thought it was a fun read and I would definitely recommend it. It is a period piece so if you don't care for those, then skip this one.

I liked the hero, he got caught up in a "wink engagement" and then had no way out of it. I was so afraid he was going to get trapped into raising another man's child but thank goodness he got away from that - nearly cost him his life but I think even losing his life would have been better than getting stuck with that woman. But, a sign of the times I guess. I liked the heroine, she fought her way through some very sticky situations, barely avoiding a rape, etc. She was strong and a bit stubborn, a bit too stubborn at times. I want to just smack her and say get over it! But again, the way a lady would act I guess. All in all it is a good read and I recommend it.

I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

This was a well executed story. I loved the characters. I thought Marcus was intriguing and well worth my time and investment.

I loved Emma. The situation was very awkward with Marcus being engaged to Emma's older sister Louise. Because of circumstances, Marcus suffered a horrific accident that disfigured him. Emma's reaction to Marcus never changed. I loved how these two were so perfect for each other.

The story highlights the society rules and dictates. It also emphasised the importance of a persons word.

It had nail biting suspense! I won't go into detail, as I don't want to spoil the story, but it will keep you focused on getting to the end of the book. So much so that you will HAVE to Finnish it'll find out what happens in the end.

There were some surprises in the story as well.

A lovely romance that ticks all my boxes!
I discovered this book on the Daily Deals page of the Dear Author blog. Like the writer of the recommendation, Beauty and the Beast tales at 99 cents are almost always an automatic buy for me. However, I wish I hadn't bought this one. The history between Emma and Marcus intrigued me, but Marcus spent entirely too much of the book refusing to marry Emma for underdeveloped reasons. His bullheaded behavior made the pacing drag, and the manufactured feeling of the conflict exposed the other main weakness of the novel, the characterization. Neither character was very fleshed out; their only goal seemed to be to make the one they loved happy. The cast of supporting characters was similarly two-dimensional. Both had horrible, entitled female relatives who felt interchangeable, and Emma's lecherous brother-in-law never made it out of the realm of caricature. I found when Marcus finally got over himself that I didn't care anymore. In my opinion, neither one earned their happy ending, and the book relies too heavily on the beauty and the beast trope to carry it.
We again meet up with the physically lovely Emma who sets her cap at her one true love, the not so physically lovely Marcus, Earl Sinclair. Even though they love each other, Marcus does not want to tie Emma, or any woman, to him permanently. His disabilities are far greater than what meets the eye. He bullies Emma into going to London to find a proper husband - with whom she will at least have a fifty percent chance of having children. Just before the vows are taken, he begs her to walk away from the alter and marry him. If her betrothed, a rather interesting Baron, hadn't championed their match she may not have walked away from him - much to all three of their happiness. Another excellent read from Ms. Gordon. Thank goodness for Kindle because you can have the entire series read before even one copy - usually out of sync - arrives by snail mail.
This novel demonstrates the power and steadfastness of true love, honor and commitment. The H and h have loved each other since they were children, but due to honor and promises they put each other aside for various reasons. Both have quirky, hurtful, and self- centered sisters. This also deals with the lecherous ways of men, and the misunderstanding of high functioning, mentally challenged people. Unfortunately they lose more time and almost each other when he decides for her what she needs to make her life happy- this without regard or acceptance of her love for him! They do manage to resolve their issues and find their HEA. Gordon is an excellent author. I love her novels and highly recommend her to others.
