It was no cramped attic, lightless and chilly rom the corners. The room had obviously once been a sitting room, attached to Kate's chamber, but now settees and armchairs were moved out and neat desks, stools, and cushioned wooden seats were brought in. Bookshelves lined the walls, and a comfortable chair was placed next to the fire with an embroidery frame and a small worktable within easy reach.

Lady Christina is dancing a set with Mr. Price. Kate felt a sweet tinge of pleasure at his words, which quite eclipsed her earlier cold fear.

Lady Christina is dancing a set with Mr. Ah, yes. Young Price. He liked to talk to her. It was far from the most effusive compliment she had ever received, but it was much more precious than any ode to her eyes and hair and toes could ever be.

The daughter of an infamous courtesan, Katerina has lost everyone she loves in a tempest off the coast of Italy. Now, claiming to be a governess, she finds herself falling for a handsome widower. But just as they give in to the desire that knows no words, a stealthy enemy plots his revenge-and their newborn passion is tested.

Amanda McCabe ' s Lady Midnight is not a genre Regency romance. A stand-alone historical, it features a very unusual female protagonist who has been raised to be a courtesan in Venice, following in her mother's footsteps. A boat accident prevents her from being pressured into accepting a wealthy English protector. She uses the death (she thinks) of all on board to shed her identity and go to England, the home of her father, to escape her fate.

She meets a handsome but physically and psychologically scared English squire who hires her to be his children's governess. Their relationship soon evolves into a romance and her "happily - ever - after is in sight, when her obsessed former suitor shows up. Harrowing trials follow involving scandal in the ton and physical danger to her and all she loves.

I have been following Amanda McCabe ' s career for many years, and do believe this is her finest book yet.

Amanda McCabe continues to turn out well-written stories with intelligent plots, something that seems to be disappearing from romance novels lately. I can't rely on reviews nowadays because, obviously, today's readers have different standards than I have. I end up returning books that are 5-star rated because of the poor quality of writing or being filled with historical errors,.. Again, I know I can trust this author to give be an interesting story about multifaceted characters and not insult my intelligence. I am thankful that she is such a prolific writer; I don't know how she does it but am so happy she is still writing.

Escaped from a life that was destined to make her a courtesan like her mother before her, Kate sets out on a brave journey. This book is full of sweet wisdom from the most unusual governess ever. And, of course, an avenging angel just when she needs him most.

I loved this historical romance, with its tale of love, loss and redemption. The protagonists, Katerina and Michael, are so authentic and beautifully written that the reader yearns for their happy ending. Well worth a click!

This book was an amazing read. I don't usually give reviews, but I had to give one for this one. A must read.

Read it in one day. Couldn't put it down. Fell in love with all of the characters. Lengthy descriptions, not my cup of tea. Loved the story, loved the writing. It was a very good way to spend a lazy Sunday.

This was a very enjoyable and engaging novel. I did get slightly frustrated with the characters at times, but still this is an engaging read.
It was ok not memorable.
